Top things to see and do
- The banks of the Nile are the greenest places in Juba. You can get a view of them from the Nile Bridge and get even closer to nature when you take a boat along the river. Trips that include food and drink are available, and you can stop off for a dip in one of the places where it’s safe to swim.
- If you’re feeling energetic, take a hike up Jebel Kujar hill. It takes about 25 minutes to get to the top and there are lots of great views on the way. When you get to the top you’ll have a panoramic view of the city below.
- Pizzas, Chinese meals, Indian specialities, Ethiopian snacks – you can get it all in Juba, but the local food is worth a try too. Sample beef and okra stew and kisra bread made from sorghum flour, washed down with hibiscus tea or aradeab – tamarind juice.
- You can buy beautiful traditional crafts, including beadwork, pottery and embroidery, from the Roots Project, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting women and children in South Sudan. You’ll find it in Nimra Talata in Juba.
Tips for travelers
Get out of the city and experience the fantastic array of wildlife Southern Sudan has to offer. See giraffes, antelopes and crocodiles, not to mention monkeys at play in the mango trees, when you visit Bandinglio National Park.
