Welcome to Ahwaz
Split in two by the Karoun River, Ahwaz is known as the city of bridges. It’s a lively, friendly place where business is booming thanks to its oil industry.
Top things to see and do
- The riverside is a popular spot for locals, especially in summer when temperatures can rise to 45°C. From boating to walks through the Riverside Park, it’s a great place to watch the world go by. You can also enjoy the views from its many bridges, which are especially pretty lit up at night.
- When oil was discovered nearby in the early 20th century, the city had a renaissance. At night, head to the edge of town and watch the flares from the oil wells light up the sky.
- For a taste of old Iran head to the Taleqani Street bazaar where you can sample local specialties. Alternatively, have a stroll along the shops and restaurants of Kianpars.
- The Masjid-E Jom’e Ahwaz mosque was built in the 9th century with additional work and repairs carried out through its long history. Its highlights include the wooden pulpit and inscriptions.
- Try local specialities like saffron ice cream and don’t miss out on the street food – Iranian, Indian and Arabic snacks are available in abundance. Wash it down with some strong Arabian coffee.
